Souldisco | Interview with Michael ”Boogaloo Shrimp” Chambers from Breakin’
Wednesday Aug 16, 2023
Wednesday Aug 16, 2023
Hello again! We have a splendid interview for this latest trip on the dance floor. Michael "Boogaloo Shrimp" Chambers is an American dancer, actor, and choreographer who gained widespread recognition for his exceptional dance skills and innovative style during the 1980s. He was a pivotal figure in the world of street dance and played a significant role in popularizing breakdancing and "popping" dance techniques. Boogaloo Shrimp's journey into the world of dance began at a young age. Growing up in Watts, Los Angeles, he was exposed to the vibrant street culture and dance scene that was flourishing in the 1980s. He found inspiration in the moves of legendary dancers like Don Campbell, Boogaloo Sam, and Popin' Pete, who were pioneers of the popping and locking dance styles. At the age of 16, Chambers shot to stardom when he landed a role in the 1984 cult classic film "Breakin'." In the film, he portrayed the character "Turbo," a highly talented and creative street dancer. Boogaloo Shrimp's performance in "Breakin'" was nothing short of mesmerizing, showcasing his unique popping and robot-like movements. His dance routines, particularly the iconic broom dance scene, became legendary and etched him into the history of dance and hip-hop culture. After the success of "Breakin'," Boogaloo Shrimp continued to showcase his dance skills in the sequel, "Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo," released in 1984. The film further solidified his status as a dance icon, and he remained a prominent figure in the dance community throughout the 1980s. In addition to his work in film, Boogaloo Shrimp collaborated with other influential dancers and choreographers, such as Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, and Gregory Hines. His contributions to dance extended beyond the silver screen, as he performed in music videos, television shows, and various live performances. While Boogaloo Shrimp's fame reached great heights during the 1980s, he encountered challenges as the popularity of breakdancing waned in the following decade. However, his impact on the dance world remained significant, and his influence can be seen in contemporary dance styles and in the work of subsequent generations of dancers. Boogaloo Shrimp's legacy continues to be celebrated by dancers and enthusiasts worldwide. His innovative techniques and charismatic performances have left an indelible mark on the history of dance, and he remains an inspiration to aspiring dancers who aim to push the boundaries of movement and self-expression. Though Boogaloo Shrimp's dancing career was most prominent in the 1980s, his contributions to dance and hip-hop culture have ensured his place as an enduring figure in the annals of dance history. Now you can learn more about this fascinating career through this conversation on Vinyl Community Podcasts!

Concert Buddie | Talking on Sugarman - Reflecting on Sixto Rodriguez
Monday Aug 14, 2023
Monday Aug 14, 2023
Welcome back, Buddies! On this episode of Vinyl Community Podcasts, I'm joined by Rob (Northern Revolutions) to share our thoughts on the incredible story of Sixto Diaz Rodriguez - recording artist, father, and subject of the 2013 Academy Award Winning Documentary "Searching For Sugarman". Mr. Rodriguez passed away recently at the age of 81, leaving behind incredible music and a story even the best writers in Hollywood could not emulate. The film suggests that Rodriguez was lost to obscurity (in the music industry) - especially in his own country - only to shockingly learn about about a devoted following in South Africa. Yet that's not the entire tale. Rob and I discuss the documentary, Rodriguez' career and album output, plus share some notes not found in the documentary and developments following the film. An artist we both came to enjoy immensely due to the film, we both found it fitting that even on the day his passing was announced he was not given his full due with the unfortunate news of the passing of Robbie Robertson of The Band. Life still imitating art; art imitating life. Fitting, no? Perhaps just another example of those "Inner City Blues"....

Hello and welcome to another Audio Excursion!
Roger Nichols was educated in Nuclear Physics and worked as an operator at a Nuclear Plant in California with the acronym SONGS. Ironically after just a few years in that industry, he threw it all away to learn how to become a Recording Engineer. He became the recording engineer for Steely Dan by luck as they wanted to record some material for Gary Katz of ABC Records, but the only engineer around was Roger Nichols. And the rest, as they say, is history. A tight knit group of professional musicians joined the production team and the band. Roger also did engineering work for many others with John Denver being a regular client and friend of Roger. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2011 leaving behing his wife Connie and 2 daughters, Cimcie and Ashley. Cimcie has graciously agreed to have a wide ranging interview here on Vinyl Community Podcasts. Enjoy!
